During the fall Brendan Foley, Domenica Dininno and Carolina Larsson have been working on the Gribshunden main gun battery. They 3D-modeled the gun carriages at Blekinge Museum using structured light scanners, then they derived the actual guns from the voids in the carriages. This is possible because each carriage was custom-made for its unique gun. We made models of the breech chambers the same way.

The results were 3D printed in nylon at LTH, and yesterday the physical 3D model of was sent to Blekinge to compare with the original gun carriage. Looked great. These guns are the earliest known naval artillery. Gribshunden was the first generation of ship specifically designed to carry a battery of heavy guns. This ship-type was the key enabling technology for long-duration ocean voyaging, and is known as a Ship of Discovery.
